2. väri, 2. yritys – 2nd color, 2nd try

Olin tosi pettynyt ensimmäiseen kurjenkelloblokki-yritykseeni. Yritin lohduttautua tummalla suklaalla ja halvalla (siis en vähällä rahalla vaan sillä seesaminsiemenmakeisella). Yleensä ne auttavat. Vaan nyt ei. Eikä kumpaakaan ole enää jäljelläkään. Oli siis ryhdyttävä tekemään jotain. Otin tähän hommaan sellaisen insinöörimäisen otteen (se on ilmeisen tarttuvaa, ainakin pitkällä tähtäimellä, tässä tapauksessa vuosikymmenien avioliiton sivutuotteena). Erittelin, mikä meni vikaan. Kohta 1: pastelliset värit ei passaa minulle, kohta 2: pikkutarkka piperrys vie hermot, kohta 3: ompelukoneeni Ladyn keskusmoottori alkoi käydä kuumana ja kone laittoi minut välillä vähäksi aikaa jäähylle.

I was really disappointed with my first attempt of the peach-leaved bell flower block. Dark chocolate and halva usually help but not this time. Besides I ran out of them already. I had no choice but to do something about it. A kind of an engineering point of view seemed to bring the right solution to this problem (obviously it’s catchy at least in the long run; in this case it’s a side effect of being married with my DH for decades). I analyzed what went wrong. 1) The pastels aren’t my favorites. 2) The accuracy required is getting on my nerves. 3) The motor of my sewing machine “Lady” heated up so much that it sent me to the penalty box from time to time.

 

Ja miten tästä toivutaan: 1) kurjenkellon kukka on aika vaalea, mutta hei, tämä on minun työni, saan käyttää ihan mitä värejä haluan, 2) ensimmäinen blokki oli 17 x 17 cm, seuraavasta teen isomman, 3) käytän isompia jämätilkkuja, niin ettei tule liian monta saumaa kohdakkain, ehkä Ladykin suostuu sitten ompelemaan (jos ei, niin en tiedä millä sitä lahjoisin, kun se ei syö suklaatakaan, ehkä lupaan puhdistaa sen puolakotelon useammin)

How can I recover from this situation? 1) The peach-leaved bell flower is quite pale, but hey, this is my quilt and I can use any colors I like. 2) The first block was 7” x 7” the next one will be bigger. 3) I’ll use bigger scraps so that too many seams won’t be overlapping. Maybe my “Lady” is then willing to co-operate (if not, I don’t know how to bribe it, maybe I’ll promise to clean its bobbin hole more often)

Otin samoja värejä kuin aiemminkin, mutta vain tummempina versioina. Sininen on oikeasti violetimpi, mutta kamera välitti kuvan liian sinisenä.

I used the same colors as earlier but in darker tunes this time. The blue has actually more violet in it but in the photo it doesn’t look exactly right.

Tein omatekoista kangasta vain sen verran kuin tarvitaan ja mietin jo tehdessäni, miltä se näyttää valmiina. 

I sewed the self-made fabric just as much as I need and tried to figure out how it’ll look like when it’s ready. 

Ihan itselleni kiusaksi tein vielä yhden pienen vaalean kurjenkelloblokin jäljelle jääneestä omatekoisesta kankaasta ja asettelin pienet blokit isomman blokin kulmiin. Sinnehän piiloutuvat! 

Just to tease myself I made another small pale block from the left overs and sewed the small blocks in the corners of the big block. They hide away there perfectly!

Tässä vertauksen vuoksi pikkuruinen pihlajanmarjablokki valtavan kurjenkelloblokin vieressä.

Just to compare, you can see here the tiny rowan berry block beside the huge peach-leaved bell flower block.

Tämä homma meni niin kuin minulla aina menee. Ensin alan innoissani tekemään ilman suunnitelmaa, sitten tulee joku ongelma ja yleensä joudun purkamaan tai työ jää UFOksi. Vaan nyt en antanut periksi ja sain itse asiassa tehtyä työlle suunnitelmankin. Kurjenkelloblokki jää keskelle, kulmablokit ovat 2/3 siitä ja reunoille vielä niitä pienimpiä blokkeja. Minun tarvitsee keksiä siis vielä 11 väriä, mutta värejähän on joka puolella, joten se ei liene turhan vaikeaa.

It was very typical of me to work in this way. In the beginning I eagerly start the sewing machine without a hint of a plan. Then there will be some kind of a trouble and I have to unstitch or the work becomes a UFO. This time I didn’t give up and eventually I made a proper plan. The bell flower block will be in the middle of the work. The corner blocks will be 2/3 of it and I need to do just a few of the smallest blocks. All I have to do is to select 11 colors more but it won’ be too difficult because there are colors everywhere around me.

2. väri: kurjenkellon sininen – 2nd color: peach-leaved bell flower blue

Vielä syyskuun lopussa löysin muutaman kurjenkellon ojan pientareelta.

Sen väri on ihan lemppareitani, vähän violettiin vivahtava sininen.

I found a few peach-leaved bell flowers on an edge of a ditch as late as the end of September. The color is one of my favorites a purplish blue.

Ja sinisiä palojahan multa löytyy. Tai niin luulin – tai siis – löytyyhän niitä sinisiä jämäpaloja varmaan kilokaupalla, mutta tämä kurjenkellon sininen on aika vaikea väri, ei puhdas sininen eikä violetti, vaan jotain siltä väliltä. Löysin kuitenkin kasoistani kangasta, jossa on aika lähellä oleva sävy. Kolmisoinnussa tähän väriin liitetään kevään vihreä ja punaoranssi. Kun niitäkin löytyi jämistä niin eikun tekemään.

I have lots of blue scraps – or at least I thought so. Well, actually I do have pounds and pounds of them but this purplish blue is a very difficult color. It’s not blue but it’s not purple either. It’s something in between. Lucky me – in my piles of scraps I found fabric scraps that have a suitable tone. Purplish blue is used with spring green and red orange in a triadic.

Ja valmis blokki näyttää tältä. And the completed block looks like this.

Enkä ole ollenkaan tyytyväinen. Näyttää pliisulta. Kurjenkellon sininen kangas ei erotu taustasta kovin hyvin, mutta tummemmat korostusvärit sitäkin paremmin.

I’m not pleased at all. The block looks too pale. The purplish blue fabric isn’t distinguished from the background very well but the darker fabrics are.

Tässä kaikki kaksi blokkia, jotka olen saanut valmiiksi. Kurjenkellon häipyminen taustaan näkyy vielä selvemmin kirkkaan pihlajanmarjan vierellä. Ehkä teen kurjenkellon vielä uudelleen tai piilotan sen jonnekin reunoille.

Here you can see all of the two blocks I have done so far. When the peach-leaved bell flower block is beside the rowan berry block it just fades away. Maybe I’ll make a new one or I’ll just hide this one somewhere on the border of the quilt.

Lisää lankoja – More yarn

… ihan kuin ei muuten olisi jo tarpeeksi niitäkin. Vaan eipä ollut varastossani ihan samanlaisia mitä löysin Kätevä messuilta eilen. Tässä on ihana lanka, jolla on omituinen nimi ”Iltasoitto”???? (Mistä näitä nimiä oikein tulee!) Langassa on 60 % villaa, 20 % silkkiä ja 20 % bambua ja aivan upea kiilto.

I have enough yarn in my stash already but not exactly the same yarn I found in the handicrafts fair yesterday. This yarn is absolutely fabulous with the peculiar name “Evening bell” (???) I wonder who makes up these names! The yarn is made 60 % of wool, 20 % of silk and 20 % of bamboo and it shines gorgeously.

 

Mutta ennen kuin pääsen käsiksi tuohon lankaan, on minulla yksi tilaustyö, johon myös löysin langan messuilta. Lanka on Drops Fabel (eikös faabeli ole joku opettavainen eläintarina?) ja väri kerrassaan uskomaton. Kokeilin jo vähän pitsineuletta.

Before I can lay my hands on that yarn I have a commission to fulfill. I found the yarn for that in the fair too. It’s Drops Fabel and the color is absolutely incredible. I already tried to knit a bit of lace.

Lisäksi ostin jo aiemmin Katia Darling –lankaa (no, tämä nimi on sentään jotenkin ymmärrettävä), jossa on lempiväriäni turkoosia. Ei aavistustakaan, mitä tästä teen, mutta pakko oli ostaa, oli se niin ihanan pehmeän näköinen ja tuntuinen lanka, 60 % merinovillaa, 40 % polyamidia.

Earlier last week I bought Katia Darling –yarn in my favorite color turquoise. I have no idea what to make out of it. I just had to buy it because it looked so beautiful and felt so soft. It has 60 % of merino wool and 40 % polyamide.
