Huhtikuu on kuukausista julmin – April is the cruelest month

Huhtikuu alkaa huomenna. Ja huhtikuu – se on kuukausista julmin.  Tämä tilkkutyö kertoo tarinan huhtikuusta 2006, joka oli kurainen, loskainen, kylmä ja luminen. Samanlainen takatalvi oli elämässänikin silloin. Toukokuuta kohti alkoi olla jo vähän vihreääkin (työn oikeassa alalaidassa)

 

April begins tomorrow. And April – it is the cruelest month. This quilt tells the story of  April 2006 which was muddy, slushy, cold and snowy. I had the same kind of spring frost in my life back then. Towards May there was a bit of green as you can see in the lower right corner of the work.

Työn muodot ja värit tulivat alitajunnastani. Valitsin kankaat sillä perusteella, mikä sattui tuntumaan hyvältä. Työ koki kovia. Kerran yhtenä yönä se putosi suunnitteluseinältäni lattialle yhdeksi mytyksi. En uskonut saavani työtä koskaan valmiiksi. Se olikin keskeneräinen parikin kertaa useita kuukausia.

The forms and colors in the work came from my subconscious. The fabric choices were based on what just happened to feel good for me. The work went through hard times. At one night it fell down from my sketch wall and it was all mixed up together. I thought I’d never get it finished. It was half-done for several months a couple of times.

Työ on käsin tikattu. It is hand quilted.

Lumitähtiä ei ollut alkuperäisessä suunnitelmassa. Ne tulivat mieleeni vasta tikkausvaiheessa.

The snow stars weren’t in the original plan. They occurred to me when I quilted the work.

Työ osallistui yhtenä Suomen edustajana 14. eurooppalaisille tilkkupäiville Ranskassa vuonna 2008. Näyttelyn aiheena oli ”Pohjoinen valo – pohjoinen väri”.

My work participated in the 14th European Patchwork Meeting in 2008 in France as one of the representatives from Finland. The theme of the exhibition was “Boreal light – boreal colour”

Pitsinen Madame – Lacy Madame

Työhuoneeni katossa roikkui vanha lampunvarjostin – siis vanha ja ruma- ei mitään vintagea. Se oli kulkeutunut huoneeseeni palveltuaan alun perin lasten huoneessa (aika hirvitys se oli sinnekin, anteeksi lapseni, jos lapsuutenne oli siitä syystä traumaattinen!). Laitan siitä ihan pienen kuvan – nopea vilkaisu riittää kertomaan kuinka suuri tarve minulla oli saada uusi varjostin.

I had an old lamp shade hanging from my working room’s ceiling – I mean old and ugly – not old and vintage. Before it drifted to my studio it had served in the children’s room (what a monster it was there too, forgive me my dear children if your childhood was traumatic because of it). I put here a tiny little photo of it – a quick glance is enough to convince you of my enormous need to have a new lamp shade.

Otin varjostimen alas katosta ja heitin siinä olevan kankaan roskiin (voiko kukaan uskoa, että tilkkuilija heittää kangasta roskiin??? tämä kertonee epätoivoni syvyyden). Kehikon kuitenkin  säilytin. Seuraavaksi noudatin mottoani: otetaan mitä on.

I took the lamp shade down and threw the cloth to the trash can (can anyone believe that a quilter throws a cloth to the garbage? This illustrates the depth of my desperation). I kept the frame though. Next I followed my motto: use what you have. 

Oli vanha virkattu takki, jonka leikkasin poikki hihojen alta.

 I had an old crocheted jacket that I cut apart under the sleeves.

Sitten oli myös kirpparilta joskus kankaan takia ostettu pitsipaita. Siitä leikkasin hihat veks.

 I also had a lace blouse I had bought in a flea market because of its fabric. I cut the sleeves off.

Sovitin ensin pitsijakun kehikon päälle ja ompelin käsin sen kehikon yläreunan ympäri.

First I put the lace blouse over the frame and sewed it by hand around the upper side of the frame.

Seuraavaksi käänsin virkatun jakun alaosan yläosasta (hmm… menee vaikeeksi) nurjalle pujotuskujaksi pari senttiä ja pujotin siihen pätkän silkkinauhaa. Sitten nuttu ylle ja napit kiinni.

Second I turned a few centimeters from the upper part of the jacket’s lower side to make a path for a silky ribbon. Then I buttoned up the jacket.

Ja voilá, Pitsinen Madame on valmis ja valaisee katossa kauniisti.

 And here you are, the Lacy Madame is ready and it lightens up the room beautifully.

6. väri: sitruuna – 6th color: lemon

Olen lukenut, että tämän kevään muotiväri olisi sitruunankeltainen, tiedä häntä. Minusta se ainakin se on ihana, valoisa väri. Tai sitten minulla on C-vitamiinin puutos.

I’ve read that the season’s color this spring will be lemon yellow. At least I think it’s a beautiful and luminous color. Or maybe I lack vitamin C.

Valitsin väripaletin taas kirjan ColorPlay mukaan. Kolmivärisointuun tarvittiin magenta ja turkoosi. Ovat ihania värejä molemmat. Tai ehkä minulla onkin värivitamiinin puutos, kun talvi on ollut niin värittömän valkoinen – niin ja pimein 20 vuoteen, siitäkin on pidetty tilastoa. En siis ole ollut aivan väärässä, kun olen valitellut pimeyttä koko talven. Onneksi minulla on ollut värikkäitä kankaita, joita hipelöidä.

I chose the color palette again according to the book ColorPlay.  Magenta and turquoise were also needed for the triadic partners. Both the colors are gorgeous. Or maybe I lack color vitamins. The whole winter has been so colorless and white – and the darkest for 20 years. I read a statistic about it. So I haven’t been totally wrong complaining about the darkness of this winter. Luckily I have had many colorful fabrics around me.

Tein tästä pienen tähden, koska minulla oli oikean väristä keltaista niin vähän. Kukin yhdeksästä ruudusta on 3 tuumaa x 3 tuumaa ja kun ompelen ne yhteen ja leikkaan tähden 7 tuumaa kanttiinsa, joten voin vielä lisätä sen vinksahtaneisuutta.

This star became a small one because I had so little of the fabric with the right tune of yellow. Each of the 9 patches is 3” x 3”. After sewing them together I cut the star at the size 7” x 7” and so I can make the wonky star even wonkier.

Tässä valmis sitruunatähti. Enää 10 jäljellä. Saisinkohan tämän työn tänä vuonna valmiiksi, jos oikein kovasti yrittäisin.

Here you are: the finished lemon star. Only 10 more to go. I wonder if I could finish the whole work by the end of this year if I tried really really hard.
