Sekku-huivi – The Sekku scarf

Noro virus on selätetty! Ensimmäiset yritykset Noro-langan kanssa tein täällä. Kahdesta kerästä Noron Sekku-lankaa ei tullut takkia, eikä liiviä, mutta tulipahan 30 cm x 200 cm huivia. Kutsun sitä Sekku-huiviksi, koska se kuulostaa niin hauskalta, vaikka sekku onkin varmaan joku japanilainen sana, jonka merkitystä en tiedä. 

I have finally recovered from the Noro virus! My first efforts with the Noro yarn were made here. Two skeins of Noro´s Sekku yarn weren’t enough for neither a jacket nor a vest, but luckily it was enough for a scarf (30 cm x 200 cm). I suppose “sekku” is a Japanese word and I have no idea what it means but it sounds nice to my Finnish ears. That’s why I decided to call it the Sekku scarf.

 

Monen yrityksen jälkeen valitsin aika tavallisen pitsineuleen. Eikä sekään ihan helppo ollut kun lanka oli niin ohutta, mutta TV:tä katsellessa huivi valmistui ihmeen nopeasti – tai sitten katson aivan liikaa TV:tä.

After many efforts I chose a rather ordinary lace pattern. Well, it wasn’t too easy since the yarn was so thin. While watching TV I managed to finish it quite quickly – or maybe I watch too much TV.

Ja värihän tietysti natsaa vaatteisiini. Onko niitä muitakin värejä kuin sininen;))

Of course the color matches with my clothes. Are there other colors than blue, I wonder;))

Kello viiden tee - Five o'clock tea

Ja miten se tehdään? And how do you make it?

Oteaan viisi kelloa. Take five clocks.

Nämä kaikki kellot ovat olleet keittiöni seinällä. Mikään niistä ei toimi enää. Niin, paitsi tuo pienin, joka raksuttaa niin kovalla äänellä, ettei sitä kärsi kuunnella. Muut lakkasivat aika pian toimimasta. Epäilen keittiön seinällä olleen osuutta asiaan. Ehkä se ei pidä siitä, että sillä roikutetaan kaiken maailman tavaraa.

All these clocks have been on my kitchen wall. None of them is working any more. Well, except for the smallest one which makes such a terrible noise that I can’t stand it. The others stopped ticking very soon. I’m certain the kitchen wall has something to do with it. Maybe it doesn’t like me putting all kinds of stuff hanging on it. 

Joka tapauksessa, otin yhden kelloista ja pienen kukkaruukun, jonka olin saanut äidiltäni. Niiden värit sopivat yhteen.

Anyway, I chose one of the clocks and a small flower pot I got from my mum. Their colors fit well together.

Järeät tongit. Strong pliers.

Tiukkaa liimaa. Strong glue.

Ja voilá, kakkuvati on valmis. Näitähän on pilvin pimein blogistaniassa lautasista ja kupeista tehtyinä, mutten ole nähnyt vielä kellosta ja kukkaruukusta rakennettuna.

And here you are, the cake plate is ready. In the blogosphere you can read about things like these been made out of plates and cups but I haven’t seen any made of a clock and a flower pot.

Sitten keitin kannullisen teetä. Teen ja mukin ostin Berliinistä, teekannu on Pietarista. Ja koska tämä ei ole leivontablogi, ostin omenapiirakan lähileipomosta. Nyt nautin vapaapäivästä.

Then I made a pot of tea. The tea and the mug I bought in Berlin and the tea pot is from St. Petersburg (Russia). Since this is not a baking blog I bought the apple pie in the local bakery. Now I’m going to enjoy my day off.

1. väri: pihlajanmarja – 1st color: rowanberry

Syyskuun blokkini väri on pihlajanmarjan punainen. Pihlajissa on paljon marjoja tänä vuonna. Joko se tarkoittaa, että tulee paljon lunta talvella tai sitten ei tule.

The color of my September block is rowanberry red. Rowan trees are loaded with berries this year. It means either lots of snow in the winter or no snow at all.

Ajattelin sitten aloittaa itselleni kaikkein vaikeimmasta väristä. Pihlajanmarja on vähän oranssiin päin kallellaan oleva punainen. En käytä sitä vaatevärinä enkä juuri missään muuallakaan. Pihlajanmarjan värisiä tilkkuja on minulle kerääntynyt pojalleni tekemästä peitosta. Se nyt ei vieläkään ole valmis, mutta jämiä on tullut jo aika kasa johtuen siitä tekniikasta, jota käytän (ks. täältä).  Blokkivärien valinnassa minun täytyy ottaa tietysti huomioon, minkä värisiä jämätilkkuja minulla on. Tarkoitukseni on päästä niistä eroon, eikä kasvattaa jämävuorta hankkimalla uusia kankaita. 

I thought I´d start with the most difficult color for me. Rowanberries are a kind of yellowish red. I don´t use that color in my wardrobe or any other place either. But I do have lots of rowanberry red scraps because I used it in the quilt for my son and the technique was very material wasting (I told you about it here). When choosing the colors for these blocks I have to consider what I have in my scrap stash. My intention is to get rid of the scraps and not to make new ones. 

Pihlajanmarjan lisäksi käytin omatekemässä kankaassa vihreää ja violettia, jotka ovat saman kolmisoinnun muut värit.

In addition to rowanberry red my self-made fabric consists of green and violet. They belong to the same triadic with the rowanberry red.

 

En toki ihan itse tätä kolmisointujuttua keksinyt, vaan se on Joen Wolfromin kirjasta ColorPlay, joka on mielestäni tosi hyvä värioppikirja tilkkuilijalle.

I didn´t make it up by myself, I read it in the book “ColorPlay” by Joen Wolfrom. I think it´s a very useful book for a quilter.

Blokkina käytän Maverickin tähteä kahdesta syystä. Ensiksi siinä ei ole niin nökön nuukaa noiden saumojen kohdistus ja toiseksi – mulla on Maverick-merkkiset farkut. Ja yhdistävänä kankaana blokeissa käytän omatekemääni Linnunmaitoa.

I´ll be using the Maverick Star as a block for two reasons. Firstly the accuracy of the seams is not so vital. Secondly – I have a pair of Maverick jeans. The unifying fabric in all the blocks will be my self-made Bird´s Milk.

Olen seuraillut 15Minutes-blogia, joka löytyy tuosta palkista oikealla. Siinä osallistujat tekevät itse omaa kangasta jämäpaloista. Tänä kesänä heillä oli haaste käyttää omatekoisessa kankaassa eri väriä joka viikko 16 viikon ajan, ja käyttää sitä kangasta sitten blokkiin. Tästä sain idean haastaa itseni käyttämään erivärisiä jämäpaloja blokeissa – sillä jämiä minulla todella riittää – hukun niihin kohta ellen tee niille mitään.

I’ve been following the 15Minutes blog for a while. You can find it on the navigator to the right. The participants make their own cloth using scraps. This summer they were challenged to use a different color every week for 16 weeks and then make a block with all the different colors. I had an idea to challenge myself to do the same because I’m going to be swamped under scraps unless I make something out of them pretty soon.

 

En lupaa, että saisin joka viikko uuden värisen blokin aikaan (turha täällä Hämeessä on hötkyillä). Ehkä kerran kuussa tai silleen. Aloitin tekemällä blokin taustakankaankin jämistä (että tulisi vähän vaikeusastetta). Värin valintaa tehdessäni tuli mieleeni sanonta, että joskus kesällä ilma on kuin linnunmaitoa. Linnut eivät tietääkseni kuitenkaan maitoa juo, saati ruoki sillä jälkikasvuaan, joten mikä lienee sanan alkuperä. Kuitenkin päätin antaa tälle itse tehdylle kankaalle nimeksi Linnunmaito.

 

I won’t promise I can make a different color block every week. (Please, remember I am from Häme and we take it slowly here). Probably I’ll make one block in a month or so. I already began with making the background cloth for the block from the scraps. When I was choosing the color I remembered a Finnish saying “the air is like bird’s milk”. It is used when the summer weather is very mild and sweet. As far as I know birds don’t drink milk and they don’t feed their fledglings with milk either, so I have no idea where the saying comes from. Anyway I decided to name my self-made cloth as “Bird’s milk”.

Värien nimet olivat alkuperäisessä haasteessa varsin mielenkiintoisia. Bubble gum pink nyt taipui helposti purkkapinkiksi, mutta Kelly Green oli jo astetta vaikeampi, siis Kellyn vihreä? Kuka on Kelly ja kuinka vihreä hän onkaan? Väri näytti ruohonvihreältä. Vaikein oli ymmärtää väri nimeltä maroon. Espanjaksi marrón on ruskea, mutta tämä maroon oli lähinnä keitetyn ruispuolukkapuuron värinen, siis sen kohdan joka, kun puuro kiehuu armotta hellalle, jämähtää kiinni kattilan reunaan.

Ajattelin sitten antaa omatekemieni kankaiden väreille itse uusia nimiä, kuten mämmin ruskea tai kissan kirsun punainen. Jälkimmäisestä väristä näyte alla, ensimmäisen nyt jokainen tietää.

 

The names of the colors in the original challenge were interesting. The Bubble Gum Pink was easy to understand but Kelly Green was more difficult. Who’s Kelly? How green is she? To me it seemed like grass green. The most difficult to figure out was maroon. In Spanish marrón is brown but this maroon looked like rye lingonberry porridge. Then I thought I could give the colors new names, like Mämmi Brown or Cats Rhinarium Red. An example of the latter above. The former – well, let’s just say it is very dark brown.
