Jäinen kokemus – Icy experience

Heinolassa oli toissa viikonloppuna jäänveistokilpailu, aiheena kohtaaminen. Jään veistämiseen tarvitaan kaikenlaisia käsityökaluja, kuten sahaa ja silitysrautaa. Jäänveistoa ei kuitenkaan ole keksitty Suomessa ja ihmettelen, miksei. Jää on täällä ehtymätön ja uusiutuva luonnonvara. Kaikki järvet ovat talvella jäässä. Ehkä sitä onkin liikaa, pysyköön vain järvessä.

International ice sculpture festival 2013 in Heinola, Finland. The theme was: Encountering. To sculpt ice you need all sorts of tools like a saw and an clothesiron. Ice sculpting wasn’t invented in Finland and I wonder why not. Ice is here inexhaustible and regenerating natural resource. All of our 60.000 lakes are covered with ice during every winter. Maybe we have too much of it and it better stay in the lakes.

Veistoskilpailun voitti Mongolian joukkue ja teos ”Ensi kertaa saunassa”. Ilmeisen traumaattinen kokemus. Yksityiskohdat työssä olivat uskomattoman taidokkaita, katsopa vaikka sormenpäitä.

The winner in the sculpting composition was team Mongolia and “First time in a sauna”. Obviously it must have been a very traumatic experience. The details of the work were unbelievably specific. Look at the fingertops.

Minä pidin eniten Japanin työstä. Siinä kerrottiin kohtaamisista suomalaismetsissä.

My favorite was team Japan. The work was about encouterings in the Finnish forests.

 Tämä kotkan ja lohen kohtaaminen oli erityisen upeasti toteutettu.

 This encounter between an eagle and a salmon was extremely skillfully carried out.

Villanvalkoinen shaali – Woolen white shawl

Talvi vain jatkuu ja jatkuu, kylmänä ja valkoisena.

 The winter goes on and on and it’s cold and white.

Neuloosi pakottelee edelleen sormissani. Jotain piti keksiä. Tanssija-tyttäreni asuu kaukana rannikolla, jossa armoton tuuli viuhuu kaduilla läpi talven helisyttäen asuntojen ikkunoita. Päätinpä neuloa hänelle lämpimän shaalin. Minulla oli vielä siskoltani saatuja villanvalkoisia lankoja. Lisäksi olin lainannut kirjastosta Victorian Lace Today –kirjan, jossa on ohjeita n. 150 vuoden takaa. Valitsin vanhan skotlantilaisen huivin ohjeen.

My fingers ache with knitting fever. Something had to be done. My dancing daughter lives in a faraway town on the seaside. A merciless wind blows through the streets of the town and makes the windows rattle. I decided to knit a warm shawl for her. I had still a few skeins of the woolen white yarns I got from my sister. I also borrowed in the library a book "Victorian Lace Today" with 150 years old patterns. I chose the pattern of a scarf from Scotland.

Ohjeessa neulottiin ensin huivin toinen pää poikittain.

 As directed in the pattern I knitted at first the other end of the scarf crosswise.

Koska en taaskaan ollut varma oliko lankaa tarpeeksi, neuloin molemmat päät ensin valmiiksi ja otin sitten silmukat toisen pään reunasta ja neuloin keskiosaa niin pitkälle kuin lankaa riitti.

As always I wasn’t sure if I had enough yarn. That’s why I first knitted both ends. Then I picked up stitches along the straight edge of the border and knitted until all the yarn was used.

Lopuksi kehittelin ihan oman versioni osien yhdistämisestä neulomalla. 

 At the end I developed my own version of how to join parts together by knitting.

Skotlantilaiset neuloja-ladyt olivat määritelleet ohjeen keskivaikeaksi, mutta he olivatkin varmasti olleet taitavampia ja heillä oli ollut enemmän aikaa kuin minulla, jonka pitää hengen pitimikseen käydä työssäkin. 

Scottish knitting ladies had defined the pattern intermediate, but they must have been more skillful than me and had more time than I as I have to work to keep body and soul together.

Tanssija-tytär oli tyytyväinen shaalin, joka lämmittää hänen harteitaan vetoisessa asunnossa meren rannalla.

 

The dancing daughter was very pleased with the shawl that now warms her shoulders in her drafty apartment on the seaside.

5. väri: kesän vihreä – 5th color: summer green

Kaipaan niin vihreää ruohoa ja apilanlehtiä paljaiden varpaideni alle. Siksi valitsin seuraavan blokin väriksi kesän vihreän. Ja pelkän vihreän.

I miss so much green grass and clover leaves under my bare toes. That’s why I chose summer green to be the next color of the block.

Niin, ja onhan minulla paljon jämätilkkuja Kesäpäivän seisauksesta. Käytin niitä nyt tähän.

Actually, I have lots of green scraps from the Summer Solstice. I used some of them in this block.

Tästä tuli tällainen pikkuruinen tähti.  It became a tiny little star.

Ei tämä työ paljon jämätilkkuvuortani pienennä. Huomasin, että tuhraan ihan pienien tilkkupalojen kanssa, kun en haluaisi heittää mitään hukkaan.

This quilt doesn’t much decrease my mountain of scraps. I noticed I wasted my time with tiny little scraps because I didn’t want to throw anything away. 

Ehkä on tihennettävä tahtia näiden tähtien kanssa.

Maybe I have to speed up with these stars.
