Hitti vai huti - To take the good with the bad

Useita vuosia sitten tutustuin Judi Barrowsin tekniikkaan, jonka avulla saattoi ommella blokkeja leikkaamatta tai ompelematta yhtään kolmiota. 

Several years ago I familiarized myself with Judi Barrow´s technique ‘Square in a square’. She promises that you´ll never have to cut or sew another triangle again.

Kolmiot eivät ole koskaan olleet vahvin lajini, koska onnistun ompelemaan niistä aina kärjet pois. Siksi innostuin aluksi tästä jutusta ja aloin ommella pojalleni uutta päiväpeittoa tällä tekniikalla. Nyt neljä vuotta myöhemmin on valmiina noin kolmasosa blokeista. Ei siis tuntunut aluksi miltään hittituotteelta. Koska minulla oli tuolloin vain hyvin vähän aikaa ommella, olin jo unohtanut tekniikan, kun seuraavan kerran jatkoin työtä, joten jouduin aloittamaan aina alusta.

Triangles have never been one of my strengths because I always manage to sew the points off. That´s why I was excited about this technique and started to sew a new quilt for my son. Now four years later I have finished about one third of the blocks. So it didn’t seem to be a hit at  first sight. Because I had very little time to sew back then, I had forgotten the technique when I continued the work and had to start over and over again.

Tässä tekniikassa tarvitaan vain erisuuruisia neliöitä ja kaitaleita, niin ja tietenkin tekniikkaan kuuluva viivain. Minulta kesti kauan tajuta, että neliöt ja niiden tarkka leikkaaminen määrittelevät blokin suuruuden. Kaitaleiden kanssa ei ole niin nökön nuukaa, vaikka ne juuri muodostavatkin varsinaisen kuvion.

To use this technique you only need different sizes of squares and stripes – and of course a special ruler for this technique. It took me quite a while before I realized that the squares and cutting them accurately define the final size of the block. The width of the stripes is not so important although they form the actual figure.

Tekniikan hitti onkin, että blokit voi tehdä nopeasti sarjatyönä, kunhan on leikannut neliöt ja kaitaleet valmiiksi. Ja se pitää paikkansa, että yhtään kolmiota ei tarvitse leikata eikä ommella.

The trick of this technique is that you can make the blocks in quick succession if you cut the squares and stripes beforehand. And the slogan is true: never cut or sew another triangle.

Ainoa huti tulee siitä, että yhdestä blokista tulee paljon leikkuujätettä, kuten tässä näkyy. Tai eihän se mitään jätettä ole, vaan materiaalia johonkin jämätilkkutyöhön – tai useampaankin. Jämissä on myös paljon kolmioita,  joten niiden ompelemisesta en päässyt eroon kuitenkaan.

The only problem is that after finishing one block you have a huge pile of waste fabric as you can see here. Well, it’s not actually wasted. I can use the material in a scrap quilt  - or several. There are  a lot of triangles in the scraps so I didn’t get rid of them after all.
