Hiljaisuus - Silence

Tämä alla oleva työni valittiin edustamaan Suomea 9 muun työn kanssa EQA:n jurytettyyn ”Oma maa – My country” -näyttelyyn Birminghamissa, Englannissa vuonna 2007. Työn nimi on ”Hiljaisuus” ja kuvaa tätä vuodenaikaa tällä maailmankolkalla. Työ on hyvin pieni, vain A4:n kokoinen. Aion kehitellä tätä teemaa edelleen - tai siis olen aikonut jo vuodesta 2007. Ehkä siitä vielä jotain syntyy, ei sitä koskaan tiedä.

 

This work of mine was elected to present Finland along with 9 other works in the EQA’s “My Country” –exhibition in Birmingham, England in 2007. It’s called “Silence” and it’s representative of this season in this corner of the world. It’s a very small quilt, only the size of an A4 paper sheet. I’ll be working on this theme – or at least have been wanting to since 2007. Maybe it’ll grow into greatness, you’ll never know.

Kuvailin työtäni jurylle näin:

”Tulin maaliskuun alussa lämpimästä, värikkäästä, meluisasta Espanjasta Suomeen. Oli varhainen sunnuntaiaamu, oli lunta, oli kylmä, oli pimeää, mutta pieni aavistus aamunkajosta. Pienen kirkonkylän raitilla ei ollut yhtään autoa, ei yhtään ihmistä, ei mitään ääniä, ympärillä vain täydellinen hiljaisuus. Vieraasta maasta palatessani hiljaisuus ympäröi minua tuttuna ja turvallisena; se oli Suomi – se olin minä.”

 

Here’s how I described “Silence” to the EQA jury:

”I had arrived in the beginning of March from the warm, colorful and noisy Spain back to Finland. It was an early Sunday morning, there was snow, it was cold and dark but there was a hint of a sunrise in the horizon. There was not a single person on the main street of a small village. No cars, no people, no sound, just complete silence. Returning from a foreign land, silence had engulfed me in a friendly and safe way. It was Finland – it was me.”

 

Karkkipaperiruusun teko-ohje – How to make a candy paper rose

Minulta pyydettiin teko-ohjetta karkkipaperiruusuille. Tässäpä se tulee.

 I was asked to tell how I made the candy paper roses. Well, here you are.

 

Tässä kaikki tarvikkeet yhteen ruusuun (metallilankaa nyt ei tietysti mene koko kieppiä yhteen ruusuun, eikä kukkateippiäkään sen puoleen). Käytä muoville tarkoitettua liimaa

Here are all the supplies for one rose (of course you don´t need all that wire for one rose only). Use the glue meant for plastic.

 

Taita kaksi ensimmäistä paperia pituussuuntaan ja liimaa pitkät reunat yhteen. Taita kolme seuraavaa leveyssuuntaan ja liimaa lyhyet reunat. Pyöristä saksilla ne kulmat, joissa ei ole liimaa.

First fold two papers by length and glue the long edges together. Second fold three papers by width and glue the short edges together. Round off with scissors the corners with no glue.

 

Liimaa ensimmäinen paperi metallilankaan kiinni ja pyöritä paperi langan ympärille ja liimaa paperin toinen kulma kiinni.

Glue the first paper to the wire and roll the paper around it. Glue the second corner.

 

Liimaa toinen paperi samoin, mutta pyöritä nyt vähän väljemmin.

Glue the second paper like the first one but roll it this time a bit less tightly.

 

Kaksi paperia käytetty -> ruusunnuppu.

Two candy paper rolled –> a rose bud.

 

Liimaa kolmannen paperin ensimmäinen kulma vähän vinoon.

Glue the first corner of the third paper a bit diagonal.

 

Samoin kolmannen paperin toinen kulma.

Do the same thing to the second corner.

 

Neljännen ja viidennen paperin kulmat liimataan myös vähän vinoon ja paperin keskiosaa taitetaan vähän laskoksille ja liimataan myös sieltä.

Glue the corners of the fourth and fifth papers also a bit diagonal. The centers of the papers need to be folded a bit and glued also. 

 

Kaikki viisi karkkipaperia on paikoillaan.

All five candy papers are glued to their places.

 

Ruusun lehden tein kultaisesta karkkipaperista (vihreitä kun ei ollut enää jäljellä) ja liimasin sen viidennen paperin liimauskohdan peitoksi.

I made the leaf of the rose from a golden candy paper (there were no green ones left) and glued it to cover the last corner of the fifth paper.

 

Ruusun varsi peitetään kukkateipillä, jonka alkuosa liimataan peittämään terälehtien alaosa.

Cover the stem of the rose with green flower tape. Secure the tape by glue for 1 cm and cover with it the bottom parts of the candy papers.

Sauvakävelijät - Nordic Walking

Muutama vuosi sitten pohjoismaisen tilkkutyökilpailun aiheena oli ”Pohjoismaista elämää”. Aihe tuntui aluksi vaikealta, koska en keksinyt mitään, mikä olisi yhteistä kaikille pohjoismaille. Päätin sitten lähteä liikkeelle siitä villityksestä, joka oli juuri tullut muotiin ainakin Suomessa ja Saksassa, nimittäin sauvakävelystä. (niin, tiedän, Saksa ei ole Pohjoismaa, testasin vain että olet hereillä). 
 A couple of years ago the theme of the Nordic quilting contest was ”Nordic life”. At the beginning I found it a bit difficult because I couldn´t figure out anything that would be mutual for all the Nordic countries. Then I decided to start with the craze that was in  fashion at the moment, at least in Finland and Germany, namely Nordic walking (yes, I know, Germany is not one of the Nordic countries, I was just testing if you´re awake).

Olin juuri ollut Ikaalisten kylpylässä kuntoilemassa sen saman naisporukan kanssa, joka pari postausta sitten opetteli virkkaamaan laukkuja (katso Bling, bling). Olimme rääkänneet itseämme kaikenlaisella kuntoilulla, myös sauvakävelyllä. Ryhmän jäsenet eivät kuitenkaan olleet malleina työlleni, vain esikuvina. Niin, paitsi tuo pieni uupunut blondi joukon viimeisenä.

I had been exercising at the Ikaalinen Spa with the same group of women who were learning crocheting a couple of posts back (see Bling, bling). We had been torturing ourselves with all sorts of sports including Nordic walking. However, I didn´t use the members of the group as models. Rather, they were examples. Well, except for the exhausted little blond  at the end of the line.

 

Työhön käytin muuten puuvillakankaita, paitsi hahmojen vaatteet tein ulkoilupukukankaista. Kahden vasemmalla olevan hahmon sauvat olen tehnyt Marimekko-kankaista, koska niihin aikoihin tuli myyntiin Unikko-kuvioiset sairaan kalliit kävelysauvat. Unikko-kangasta minulla ei ollut, mutta olipahan Jokapoikaa ja Muijaa.

I used cotton fabrics except the clothes of the figures that I made of fabrics for outdoor wear. The walking poles of the two figures on the left I made out of Marimekko-fabrics because back then they started to sell walking sticks with the Unikko-design and they were extremely expensive. I didn´t have any Unikko-fabric (unikko = poppy) but I did have some Jokapoika (=every boy) and Muija (=old lady) fabrics.

 

Koska aloin tehdä tätä työtä syksyllä, oli luontevaa valita taustaksi syksyinen suomalainen metsä keltaisine koivuineen ja punaisine vaahteroineen. Sinä vuonna sattui vielä olemaan komea ruska, joten imin sitä itseeni ja valitsin kankaita sen mukaan. Piirsin työhön ensin 10 naishahmoa, mutta koska kilpailussa oli työn koko rajattu, en saanut kaikkia mahtumaan ja jouduin jättämään 4 hahmoa pois, koska metsän puiden takia halusin työstä pystysuuntaisen. Piirsin työn kolmeen kertaan ennen kuin sain kaikki saumat sovitettua niin, että ompeleminen olisi helppoa. Vaan eihän se niin mennyt, työtä tehdessä vasta huomasin asioita, jotka olisi pitänyt suunnitella paremmin.

Because I started this work in autumn it was only natural to choose an autumnal Finnish forest as the background. That year the birches were unusual yellow and maples were red and orange. I drank in the colors and chose the fabrics accordingly. At first I drew ten female figures but since the size of the work at the contest was limited I had to leave out four of them. Because of the trees I wanted to make the work standing upright. I designed it three times before I was satisfied with the places of the seams. That way the sewing should have been rather easy, but when I began sewing I only noticed things that I should have designed better.

 

Tikkasin työn käsin ja ihan huvikseni pidin kirjaa tikkaamiseen käytetystä ajasta, ja sitä kertyi 174 tuntia 40 minuuttia, siis pelkästään käsin tikkaamiseen! 

I hand quilted the work and just for fun I did some bookkeeping of the time I used for the quilting. The result was: 174 hours and 40 minutes!

 

Niin, ja sen kilpailun tulos sitten. Työni ei sijoittunut – vaikka oli yksiväriset reunat (ks. Suomen Luonto)! Kilpailun voitti työ, johon oli kuvattu poroja ja Lappia. Melko kliseinen valinta, jos minulta kysytään. Lappia ei ole kuin ihan pohjoisessa. Enkä ole kuullut, että Tanskassa tai Islannissa olisi poroja.

What about the result of the contest? My work didn´t place – even though it had monochromatic bindings (see Finnish Nature)! The work that came in first pictured reindeer and Lapland. What a cliché if you ask me. Lapland is located only in the northern parts of Finland, Sweden and Norway. My dear readers from Iceland and Denmark, correct me if I´m wrong, but I haven´t heard of there being any reindeer in your country.
