Nimetön (Innamoraton innoittama) – Nameless (inspired by Innamorato)

 

Jokin aika sitten selasin erästä sisustuslehteä ja siellä erään asunnon seinällä oli taulu, joka sai minut innostumaan. Halusin ottaa siitä vaikutteita tilkkutyöhöni, koska se oli hyvin tilkkutyömäinen.  Kuvatekstissä mainittiin vain tekijän sukunimi: Innamorato. Sehän on italiaa ja tarkoittaa rakastunut (mies). Siksi Google-haku toi valtavasti tuloksia, mutta lopulta löysin hänet: Daniele Innamorato, kuvataiteilija. Etsin hänen nettisivultaan tämän taideteoksen nimeä ja lopulta (hänellä oli valtavasti teoksia) löysin sen. Hän ei ollut antanut sille nimeä, mistä olin jokseenkin pettynyt. Mutta sain selville teoksen koon, 2 m korkea ja 5 m leveä. Valtava siis kuten olin arvellutkin, lehtikuvassa se peitti koko seinän. Valitsin siitä vain pienen palan keskeltä ja ajattelin tehdä triptyykin. Toistaiseksi olen saanut valmiiksi vain keskimmäisen osan.

Some time ago I glanced through a magazine of interior decoration. I saw a painting on a wall of a room and got excited. I realized I could use it as an influence to a quilted wall-hanging. In the cutline there were only the surname of the artist: Innamorato. That is an Italian word meaning “a man in love”. That´s why I got tremendously results in the Google, but finally I found him: Daniele Innamorato, visual artist. In his website I tried to find the name of this artwork and at last (he has enormously artworks) I found it. It was nameless and I was quite disappointed. But I found out the size of the artwork, height 2 meters and width 5 meters. A huge one as I had thought because in the press photo it covered a hole wall of a room. I chose a little piece in the middle and planned to make a triptych. So far, I have finished only the middle part.

 

 

Pieniä kangaspaloja oli jäänyt paljon edellisistä töistäni. Niissä oli jo valmiina silitettynä liimakangas taustapuolelle. Ei tarvinnut kuin silittää ne kiinni taustakankaaseen. Aloitin keskeltä. Tilkkutarkastaja valvoi tekemisiäni.

I had a lot of small pieces of fabrics from my earlier works. They had already iron-on-fabric on the back side. I just ironed them on the back fabric. I began in the middle. The quilt inspector kept an eye on every step.

 

 

 Keskusta alkoi hahmottua.

The middle of the work started to take shape.

 

 Jatkoin keskustasta ylöspäin, tai alaspäin, en vielä tiennyt kummin päin.

I continued upwards from the middle, or downwards, yet I didn´t know which one.

 

 

 

Työ alkoi olla valmis, mutta täydensin sitä mieleni mukaan lisää – ja lisää – ja lisää. Ja pieniä kangaspaloja riitti edelleen. Ja riittää varmasti, jos joskus teen ne kaksi muuta osaa.

My work seemed to be finished but still I completed it more – and more – and more. And those small fabric pieces went on and on. I´m sure there will be enough of them to finish those two missing parts too.

 

Vinotikkasin työn kotikoneella kahdella erivärisellä langalla. Työn koko on n. 50 cm x 90 cm. Minikokoinen tutkielma alkuperäisestä teoksesta siis.

I quilted the work with my domestic machine. The size of it is about 50 cm x 90 cm. So, a mini sized study of the original artwork.

 

 

Tilkkutarkastaja vahti reunan tikkausta silmä tarkkana.

Tänään alan taas vuosittaisille talviunilleni. Ehdin ottaa kunnon torkut ennen talvipäivän seisausta, joka on tasan kuukauden päästä.

The quilt inspector watched closely that I finished the binding properly.

Today I´ll start my annual winter sleep 😉. “Kaamos”(polar night) is entering to this latitude (60,98⁰ N) and the winter solstice is exactly a month ahead. I have plenty of time to have a good nap before it. See you next year.

 

Feikki katedraalin ikkuna – A fake cathedral window

 

Sohva kaipasi suojaa kissan kynsiltä. Todella vahvaa suojaa, joten päätin tehdä farkkukankaasta suojapeiton katedraalin ikkuna -mallilla. Ei ihan perinteisellä kuitenkaan, koska ei se farkuista onnistuisikaan.

My sofa needed to be protected from my cat’s nails. It had to have really really strong protection. So, I decided to use jeans to make the cover and ended up to the cathedral window -model. But not the traditional one because it wouldn´t work with jeans.

Aluksi kiertelin lähipaikkakuntien kirpputorit ja ostelin vanhoja farkkuja. Käytin peittoon yhteensä 8 kpl farkkuja, 2 kpl farkkuhameita, 1 farkkutakin ja 1 farkkutyynyn.

For a start I went through all the flea markets in the neighborhood and bought anything made of denim: 8 pair of jeans, 2 pair of denim skirts, 1 long denim jacket and 1 denim pillow.

Otin mallineeksi yhden sopivan näköisen rasian kannen, halkaisija 14 cm. 

As a template I chose a top of a round metal box that seemed suitable, diameter 14 cm.

Ensin yritin leikata leikkurilla, mutta totesin, että saksilla onnistuu paremmin. Tilkkutarkastaja oli tietenkin vahtimassa.

 I began cutting with a roller cutter but soon I realized the scissors were better. The quilt inspector was monitoring me as usual. 

Leikkasin yhteensä 323 ympyrää ja piirsin jokaisen ympyrän sisään neliön 10 cm x 10 cm ompelulinjoiksi.

I cut 323 circles and drew a square (10 cm x 10 cm) inside each square as guidelines for the sewing.

Siksakkasin jokaisen ympyrän, koska en halunnut reunojen liestyvän. Toki joku voi haluta nimenomaan sitä ja harjaa vielä reunat lopuksi.

I zigzagged every circle because I didn´t want the edges to fray. Certainly, someone may want to have just that effect and even brush the edges in the end.

Pitihän ne kaikki sitten vielä silittää, koska reunat kupruilivat siksakin jäljiltä

I had to iron each one of them because the edges waved so much.

Tässä sovitusvaiheessa olin jo ommellut palat yhteen neljän tilkun leveydeltä ja koko sohvan pituudelta. Tilkkutarkastaja oli tietysti apuna.

I sewed four patches together and then on a row of the length of the sofa. I tried them on with a little help from my quilt inspector of course.

Minulla oli kaksi kirpparilta ostamaani verhoa, joissa molemmissa oli turkoosia. Niistäkin piti leikata 10 cm x 10 cm neliöt jokaisen pyöreän tilkun sisään.

At the flea market I had also bought two curtains with turquoise in them. I cut 323 squares of 10 cm x 10 cm to put inside of every round patch.

Sitten vaan sommittelin neliöt pyöreisiin tilkkuihin. Neljän tilkun leveydeltä oli työtä helpompi käsitellä. Reunat jäivät tässä vaiheessa vielä kääntämättä, se oli viimeinen vaihe.

Then I arranged the squares on the round patches. It was easier to handle the work if its width was only 4 patches. I didn´t turn the outer edges at this point. It was the last thing to do.

Jälleen siksakilla ompelin sisustilkut kiinni farkkutilkkuihin.

Again, I used the zigzag to sew the round patches to the square patches.

Tässä valmista tilkkupintaa. Käytin ompeluunkin kaikkia langanjämiä, ei värillä väliä kunhan oli sinistä. Peitto on vähän rouhee muttei liian, koska sohva on kuitenkin olohuoneessa. Sen koko on 2 m x 2 m, se on aika painava ja oli työläs tehdä, mutta lopputulokseen olen tyytyväinen.

This is a part of the finished quilt surface. For the sewing I used all kinds of sewing thread I had as long as it was blue. The quilt is a bit rough but not too much, after all the sofa is in my living room. The size of the quilt is 2 m x 2 m, it´s quite heavy and laborious to make but I am satisfied with the final result.
