Bling bling

Kun syksy oli vielä hienoimmillaan, 11 naista eri puolilta Etelä-Suomea kokoontui yhteen viikonlopuksi kuten joka vuosi jo 7 vuoden ajan (vai montako se oli?). Se ei ole mikään salaseura eikä ompeluseura eikä edes salainen ompeluseura, vaikka yhdestä tämänvuotisesta aiheesta niin voisi päätellä. Halukkaat harjoittelivat virkkaamista juomatölkkien avausrenkaista ja langasta. Itse en osallistunut harjoituksiin, koska totesin että materiaalin hankinta olisi minulle hyvin hidasta ja se saattaisi vaarantaa terveyteni (riippuen juomatölkkien sisällöstä tietenkin).

When this autumn was still at its best, 11 women from different corners of southern Finland gathered together for a weekend like every year for the 7^th time already (or how many times has it been?). It is not a secret society or a sewing society nor even a secret sewing society even though you might draw that conclusion from one of this year’s topics.  All who wanted could practice crocheting with thread and opening tabs of beverage cans. I didn´t participate in the practice session because I realized that collecting the material would be difficult for me and besides it would probably risk my health (depending on the contents of the cans of course).

Tarvitsee osata tehdä vain ketjusilmukoita, kiinteitä silmukoita ja pylväitä, ei muuta. 

 All you need to know is how to make a chain stitch, a single crochet and a double crochet and that’s all. 

Nämä kassit ja pussukat olivat ihailtavina ja inspiraation lähteinä, eivät siis valmistuneet viikonlopun aikana.

 These bags and purses were there just to be admired and giving inspiration. They weren´t completed during the weekend.

Punaiset purjeet – Red sails

Istuin eilen parvekkeella ottamassa aurinkoa. Tosin vain kasvoille, mutta enpä ole moista tehnyt koskaan ennen lokakuussa. Joinakin vuosina olen voinut ottaa aurinkoa jo huhtikuun lopussa, mutta en koskaan lokakuussa. Kesät ovat tulleet pidemmiksi ja kuumemmiksi näilläkin leveysasteilla. Siinä istuessani ajatukset tietysti lipuivat kesään ja erityisesti veneisiin ja laivoihin.

Yesterday I was sitting on my balcony sunbathing. Well, only for my face that is but I have never been able to do such a thing in October. Sometimes it has been possible to sunbathe already at the end of April but never in October. Summers have become longer and hotter even on these latitudes. So I was sitting there thinking of summer and especially boats and ships.

 

Tein pari vuotta sitten tilkkupeiton tilaustyönä erään ystäväni juuri syntyneelle lapsenlapselle. Ystäväni oli rohkea ja antoi minulle vapaat kädet tehdä mitä halusin. Ja niin minä teinkin! Olin aina halunnut tehdä purjeveneblokin ja nyt käytin sitä tässä peitossa.

A couple of years ago I made a commission quilt to a friend of mine who wanted to give it as a gift to her newborn grandchild. She was brave and gave me free hands to do whatever I wanted. And so I did! I had always wanted to try a sailboat block and I used it in this quilt.

Tein muutaman purjeen punaiseksi. Muistin kuulleeni lapsena iskelmän nimeltä ”Punaiset purjeet”. Mietin sitä silloin pienessä päässäni ja ihmettelin, miksi purjeet olivat punaiset, sillä en koskaan ollut Suomessa nähnyt punaisia purjeita, ainoastaan valkoisia.

I made a few of the sails red. I remembered that as a child I used to listen to a song called “Red sails”. In my little head I kept wondering why the sails were red. I had never seen red sails in Finland, only white sails.

 No, itse asiassa tässä työssähän melkein kaikki purjeet ovatkin sinisiä.

Well, anyway in this quilt almost all sails are blue.
